Mythological beings are part of the valleys and mountains of Asturias and in this case they give their name to a vertiginous itinerary. The route of The Xanas follows the narrow path carved into the mountain wall that goes up the stream of Viescas. Tunnels and sections equipped with ropes anchored to the wall are the hallmarks of this route that combines the work done by nature and man, one sculpting this beautiful valley and the other carving the path that runs through it, undoubtedly an incredible hiking route in Asturias.

Many of the hiking routes in Asturias follow old paths that have been used since time immemorial by muleteers, locals and travellers who travelled through these lands. The Route of The Alba in the heart of the Redes Nature Park is a clear example of this. This beautiful itinerary joined and still joins the council of Sobrescobio with the council of Aller. Today it has become one of the most visited hiking routes in the area. Starting from Soto de Agues, it takes us through a narrow gorge, putting us in the shoes of the old muleteers who used to cross these mountains.

Who has not heard of Covadonga and its lakes or the Picos de Europa National Park, without a doubt a spectacular place. Lake Enol, Lake Ercina and the lesser known Lake Bricial are visited by thousands of people every year. This circular route takes us through this area of the Picos de Europa and allows us to enjoy the beautiful panoramic views it offers. It is an uncomplicated route that offers us different alternatives that allow us to vary its layout and adapt it to our tastes, so that we have no excuse that prevents us from visiting the Covadonga Lakes.

Another of the world-famous hiking routes in Asturias is undoubtedly the Cares route. Located like the previous route in the Picos de Europa Natural Park, this itinerary could also be included in a selection of routes in neighbouring León. Its route links Poncebos in Asturias with Cain, in León, along a spectacular path carved by man to facilitate access to the water channel that runs through this narrow gorge. A route that is perhaps a little too touristy but which retains all the attractions of the great mountain routes.

We return to the councils that are home to the Route of the Xanas to tell you about another of the incredible itineraries that can be found in Asturias, the Greenway of the Bear Path. The mining past of this land is undeniable and this route is a clear example. The old railway line along which the mineral was extracted has today become an attractive route that reveals dream landscapes. But its attractions do not stop there, they are joined by Paca and Molina, the two bears that live next to the hiking route and that with a bit of luck we will be able to meet in person.

We return to the Redes Natural Park to propose the route through the gorge of Arrudos and Lake Ubales or the Path of the Arrudos, as it is also known. This route is perhaps the most attractive of all the routes in Redes and one of the most incredible in Asturias. It is a physically demanding route, but it can be divided into several sections depending on your abilities. If you are looking for spectacular landscapes, to walk along an ancient path with stairs carved into the rock and to feel like the locals who, helped by their holly or Arrudos sticks, used to walk through these places, this is the route for you.

The Natural Park of Somiedo treasures countless hiking routes that go through its most hidden corners. One of these routes allows us to visit the Saliencia Lakes, which make up a magnificent natural site. The Mine, The Cave or Calabazosa are some of them that we reach from the High of the Farrapona, famous for being one of the usual endings in the Cycling Tour of Spain. As you can see, this route allows you to feel the atmosphere of the high mountains with a certain degree of comfort, although not without effort.
