To put on your backpack, to put on your boots and start walking along the paths of La Rioja is to make a journey through history, it is to walk among dinosaurs, Celtiberians, Romans, castles, kings, saints, pilgrims and illustrious characters, it is a constant awakening of the senses, it is the ochre colour of the vineyards in autumn, it is to taste their wines, savour their fruit and vegetables, it is to hear the stories told to us by their elders while we stop along the way.
Trekking in La Rioja means getting to know a land of mountains, valleys and rivers, forests, storks and wolves, but also, if we are attentive, we can see the Bonelli's eagle or listen to the eagle owl. A land full of contrasts known worldwide for its wines, but which also treasures natural spots of great beauty and incalculable value. Thick forests, great mountains and impressive valleys are crossed by countless trekking routes, which in many cases follow ancient paths full of history and traditions.
Now we would like to offer you some hiking routes through La Rioja, which, given its peculiarities, will not leave you indifferent, and which we hope will serve as a starting point for you to discover this land and its beautiful corners.

This long way takes us to know part of the Sierra of La Demanda, starting from the town of Ezcaray in the Oja valley and taking as destination the town of Villoslada de Cameros, in the Sierra Cebollera. The GR of the High Iberian Valleys throughout its three stages allows us to visit places such as the Monastery of Valvanera, which houses the image of the patron saint of La Rioja, and emblematic localities of the Viniegras or the Cameros riojanos, places that are part of the history and present of La Rioja. In addition, this hiking route that runs between mythical peaks takes us into spectacular spots reserved for a few adventurers.

Path of high landscape and historical value whose route will transport us to past times visiting the Castle of Clavijo, where according to the legend the apostle Santiago appeared mounted in his horse in aid of the Christian troops that fought against the Saracens. We will also climb to the top of Mount Laturce, crowned with a cross commemorating the battle of Clavijo. This is a wonderful viewpoint that will make us understand why La Rioja is a land of contrasts. Then we will descend to the ruins of the monastery of San Prudencio, at the very gates of the narrow valley of Leza, La Rioja Biosphere Reserve.

Between the towns of Arnedillo and Préjano, in the middle of the Cidacos valley, runs this beautiful greenway that was once the route of the mining train and that now, conditioned, makes us return to past times through tunnels, and abandoned mining infrastructure. While they observe us colonies of rupicolous birds from the air. A sister greenway of the Cidacos Greenway that climbs from Calahorra to Arnedillo joining this part of La Rioja with the fertile Ebro valley, famous for its Icnitas footprints and for the benefits of its waters.

Nature and history awaits us on this route that joins Aguilar and Cervera of the Alhama River. This hiking route goes through limestone cliffs, home to griffon vultures, brings us closer to the archaeological site of Contrebia Leucade, ancient bastion of the ancient cultures that inhabited these lands. It also allows us to discover the singular Inestrillas where we can observe the houses excavated in the rock, vestiges of an old medieval high town. Of the importance that these lands had throughout the years, the remains of the fortifications that keep the hills of Cervera del Río Alhama and Aguilar del Río Alhama speak to us.

Here we have an exclusive corner of La Rioja, chosen as a retreat by San Millán to dedicate to ascetic life as a hermit. Entering the valley of the River Cardenas from San Millán de la Cogolla where the Monasteries of Yuso and Suso are located, cradle of the Castilian language, we will go through one of the most luxuriant beech forests in the region that is intermingled with ashes, maples, hollies...to reach this wonderful viewpoint. Located in the natural park of Sierra Cebollera, the route starts from the refuge of Achichuelo, located near the town of Villoslada de Cameros. This magnificent natural park not only offers us the chance to see some of the most beautiful and famous waterfalls in La Rioja, whose scenic value is undoubtedly increased if we find them frozen, but also allows us to know the culture and customs of the people who live here, visiting for example the chapel of Lomos de Orio, place of worship and traditional pilgrimages or following some of the hiking routes that run through the park.
Receiving the river Ebro on its arrival in La Rioja, perched on the cliffs of Bilibio, in the spot known as the Conchas of Haro within the Obarenes Mountains, we find this small hiking route that will take us to this privileged balcony of La Rioja, the site of the world-famous Haro Wine Battle. Once at the top of the cliffs, at the foot of San Felices, we will be able to contemplate the real sea of vineyards that extends around the river Ebro that continues its calm flow bathing La Rioja from west to east, from Briñas to Alfaro.

There are many hiking routes that can be found in La Rioja, each with its peculiarities and preferences, but we could not leave aside the ascent to the roof of La Rioja, the San Lorenzo with its 2271 m of altitude is one of the kings of the Iberian System, which in summer we can ascend with relative ease through some of the routes that lead to its summit. Summit from which we can contemplate this land of contrasts, immersing ourselves as far as we can see, which on clear days will allow us to intuit with relative clarity the Pyrenees themselves.
