In the foothills of the Castril Natural Park awaits the pretty village that gives it its name, Castril. This town in the province of Granada treasures a rich historical and artistic heritage that has grown over the years thanks to the Castril river next to which it is located. A river that has carved a narrow gorge through which runs the Path of the Cerrada of the river Castril, a spectacular route, suspended on wooden walkways, which follows the course of the river, crossing it thanks to a vertiginous suspension bridge. An adventure not to be missed, an ideal walk for the whole family.
To reach the starting point of the route of the Cerrada of the river Castril we must go, as it could not be otherwise, to Castril. We can start the route either from the town itself or from the parking area of the Park of the Arboleda Perdida, where we will find the real beginning of the Path of the Cerrada of the river Castril. It is very likely that on busy days we will have to park further away and head on foot to meet the official route.
In our case we are going to take as the starting point of the route through the Cerrada of the river Castril the parking area in the surroundings of the Park of the Arboleda Perdida. We walk the few metres that separate us from the start of the path surrounded by the thick vegetation of the park we are walking through. The path takes us past the building that houses the public baths. Shortly after, the old power station building and the wrought iron gate that marks the true beginning of the path of the Cerrada of the river Castril await us.
The wooden footbridges, former railway crossbeams, are now the protagonists of the route, together with the spectacular scenery that surrounds us.
Almost before we know it, this beautiful stretch comes to an end, and it is time to begin a gentle descent that will take us to the Castril riverbed, where we will continue. A little further on another of the main attractions of this route awaits us, the suspension bridge that we must cross. After crossing it, we enter a tunnel carved into the rock, which halfway through gives us the opportunity to take a detour to a beautiful viewpoint. After this viewpoint we return to the route and leave the tunnel to go to the old mill of La Cerrada (0h 25min), after crossing another bridge, this time without complications for people with vertigo.
This point is usually for many the end of this beautiful route, returning along the same route to the car park from where they started. However, if we wish, or if we leave from Castril itself, we can follow a circular route. To do this we only have to follow the signs and go up the path between terraces and crops that ascends towards the Peña de Castril, to enter the town and walk through its streets. Once in Castril, we only have to go down to the Walk of the Arboleda Perdida (1h 00min).
1-At present, depending on the state of the itinerary and the number of visitors, we may find that the access gates are closed if conditions are not suitable or that we have to pay for access at certain times of the year.
2-Initially the route is not difficult, but we must pay attention to the walkways, especially if we go with children.
3-The climb from the mill to Castril is quite steep, but if you are used to walking, it should not be too much of a problem if you take it easy.
4-The tunnel can be traversed without the need for a torch or headlamp, although it is a good idea to carry one or use your mobile phone's light to avoid unwanted footsteps.
