It is a small hamlet of the municipality of Moratinos which is only two kilometers away. The existence of San Nicolás del Real Camino has been known since the middle of the 12th century, as some documents testify that in that century there was a hospital for pilgrims on the Way of Saint James and lepers guarded by the Order of Saint Augustine, this hospital was dedicated to Saint Nicholas.
Very possibly the origin of the locality is not much older. The municipality has always been related to the Way and closely linked to the Temple until they, the Templars, in 1183 and with the consent of King Alfonso VIII, exchanged it for other properties. Since 1554, the Dominican nuns were the administrators of this hospital, which is believed to have been located next to the cemetery.
A good option to enjoy the peace and quiet of this quiet village and protect yourself from the implacable summer sun is to rest on the benches surrounding one side of the church of San Nicolás Obispo dating from the thirteenth century and is built in brick, with a beautiful baroque altarpiece inside. There was also a Templar church of which there is no trace today.
San Nicolás del Real Camino celebrates festivities on the third Sunday in September.
It is said in the village that possibly a column in the cemetery could be a vestige attesting to the existence of such a hospital in the place.
From the Jacobean relationship of Saint Nicholas his own name Del Real Camino has been preserved.
San Nicolás del Real Camino can be reached by following the section of the N-120, Vigo-Logroño, which goes from Carrión de los Condes to Sahagún, with two nearby junctions with the A-231 between Burgos and León.
The bus line that covers the route Santervas de la Vega-Palencia stops at San Nicolás del Real Camino in the centre of the village on Wednesdays and Fridays.
The closest rail link to San Nicolás del Real Camino is in Sahagun.
