It is a small village within the immense Palencian plain of Tierra de Campos. The name Villarmentero de Campos could be an agglutination, a compendium between the Latin word villa and the name, already used in Visigothic times, Armentarius. Villarmentero de Campos, related to the Pilgrim's Way to Santiago, is already mentioned in the year 1229. In addition, in old documents he is related to the brotherhood of San Martín through the brotherhood, annexed to it, of the Vera Cruz that owned a hospital and hostel in the village located in the town centre on Francesa street.
The parish church of San Martín de Tours, made of adobe and stone, with a 16th century Mudejar-style wooden coffered ceiling in the portico area, deserves the visitor's attention. Villarmentero also offers a small recreation and rest area on the outskirts of the village, with a fountain and protected from the arduous sun by three large, century-old pine trees.
Villarmentero de Campos celebrates its festivities in honor of San Martín de Tours on November 11 and May 9 honors San Gregorio.
Villarmentero de Campos is one of the smallest villages in the province of Palencia.
You tell by the place the story of how the relics of San Martín de Tours appeared inexplicably, in the countryside of this small locality, which were prepared in a chest to be transported in a mule, in the then papal city of Avignon, where without knowing how or why they disappeared. And the story continues telling us how the mule, here appeared, loaded with its precious treasure entered the church of the town and the bells in case they started to ring, being such its reply that the people approached surprised by its call finding inside the animal and its cargo. The acemile did not seem very pleased with this church and as if she wanted to share her precious load with other places she went to another church nearby and located on the Jacobean route.
To Villarmentero de Campos we arrive following the road that joins Frómista, in the A-67 between Palencia and Santander, with Carrión de los Condes, in full A-231 or highway of the Way. This road also connects it with the nearby towns of Revenga de Campos, Población de Campos and Villalcázar de Sirga.
