Did you know that... Orbaneja Riopico

Surrounded by cereal fields, it is located only 12 km from Burgos, on the banks of the river Pico, and its configuration is that of a village-way. Orbaneja Riopico has belonged to the Alfoz de Burgos. Alfoz is the name used during the Middle Ages to refer to a geographical rural term belonging to the council of the corresponding town, and there are scattered several villages or places forming a set with autonomy within the kingdom.

Orbaneja Riopico

A little more history

It depended on the Monastery of San Pedro de Cardeña as the jurisdiction of the abbot. The monastery had the right to appoint the pedestrian mayor of the locality. It is one of the fourteen villages that formed the Intendencia de Burgos during the period between 1785 and 1833, as recorded in the Census of Floridablanca in 1787.

What to see in Orbaneja Riopico?

Among its streets you can see examples of popular architecture with limestone houses and some that preserve the old wooden framework. There are also several manor houses with coats of arms on their façades. In the centre of the village there is a simple hermitage, dedicated to the Inmaculada, of rectangular construction, with a semicircular arch entrance on the façade, over it a coat of arms and a small belfry which, crowned by a triangular pediment and three pinnacles decorated with balls, houses a bell. The parish church of San Millán Abad is located on the hill to a side of the town centre. It dates from 1877 and at the foot of the church nave is the tower crowned by a bell tower that dates from the 17th century. Inside the church there is a curious carving of San Roque dressed with the clothes and attributes of a pilgrim.
