The Orgi Forest, nature in its purest state

The valley of Ultzama, in the Pamplona basin, treasures remarkable attractions that invite visitors to visit it, from its famous and appreciated gastronomy to its rich history, which are more than enough reasons, to which are added its important natural sites. Places such as the Orgi Forest, which forms part of the area known as the Robledales de Ultzama and Basaburua, a natural area that is home to hundreds of years old unique trees and flora and fauna of great ecological value.

Orgi Forest

The route with only 2.6 km allows us to enter the Orgi Forest following a well cared and conditioned path adapted for people with reduced mobility, which starts from the car park of the welcome centre of the Orgi recreational park. A route that will reveal this old forest of great beauty, a sample of the landscape that once covered much of the valley. Going through its hidden corners we will be able to know the different states through which the oaks pass throughout their cycle during the year and how the fauna that has chosen this paradise as home takes advantage of the resources that these put at its disposal. An ecosystem in perfect equilibrium in which even the old dead trunks have their essential function, serving as home and food to a multitude of beings. The vegetation of the undergrowth or the ponds and lagoons that we will find along the route also form an important part of the Orgi Forest.

Birdwatching Observatory

Lagoons inhabited by amphibians such as the marbled newt, the San Antonio frog or the agile ranal. The viewpoint of the lagoon of Tomaszelaieta, allows us to lean out to this peculiar habitat without our presence can alter its balance. Undoubtedly the birds are other of the protagonists of this route, sample of it is the observatory of birds, to which we can approach us to, in total silence, to spend a good time contemplating to the different species that live here. A route that will surprise us with beautiful corners that will envelop us with their calm or with entertaining stretches where we will discover and know each particularity of this forest. A route that, on our arrival back at the car park, from which we left, will undoubtedly leave us the sadness of having reached the end of its route but also the satisfaction of the places visited in the Orgi Forest.

Orgi Forest

The Legend

Legend has it that many years ago a young lamia terrified the whole valley with her spells and enchantments. One day, a new family arrived in the region with a young and stocky lumberjack among its members. While the lumberjack was working one morning in the forest, he approached the lamia from behind in order to have fun conjure one of his spells. The snap of a branch betrayed her, and the young woodcutter turned quickly to hear the noise. The two were instantly in love with each other, but at the moment they were surprised by an enraged crowd that approached in search of the picara lamia to make her pay for her misdeeds. Seeing what was coming upon them, the young lumberjack grabbed the girl and put the edge of his axe around her neck, not only did he stop the crowd, he also convinced them to let him take her to the arid valley on the other side of the mountains to kill her. Days, months and years passed and nothing else was known of the lumberjack and the lamia but the most surprising of all is that what was an inert valley had become a fertile land, plagued with robust oaks under which grew a great variety of tasty mushrooms and in whose green fields the cattle grazed quietly.

How to get to Orgi Forest

To get to the Orgi Forest we can do it from Pamplona following the N-121-A that communicates it with Irún. A few kilometres further on you will find the junction with the NA-411 road that leads to Erripa and Lizaso, where the Bosque de Orgi is located. Also in this same N-121-A but coming from Irún we will have, after passing through Ventas de Arraitz, the diversion of the NA-4230 that leads to Lizaso through Arraitz and Gerendiain among other localities. Another possibility is from the A-15 between Pamplona and San Sebastian from which several roads start in the vicinity of the junction with the A-10 from Vitoria. Once in Lizaso in the short stretch that separates it from Gerendiain we will find in the welcome centre of the natural recreational area of Orgi, where we will be able to park our vehicle with a cost of 2 euros and from which the route departs.

Pet area, hiking with my dog

A walk for our friend who will have to do tied, as it marks the rules of the park.

Except at the beginning where we will have a fountain, we will not have more accessible water points for our companion.

To the possible mascots that we can find we must add the horses of the near equestrian that cross the zone, that yes for the outside.

Description of the route through the Orgi Forest

We begin the tour in the car park (0h 00min) of the welcome center of the recreational park of Orgi Forest.

We begin the route of the Orgi Forest

We cross the track by which we enter from the nearby road to enter this recreational area.

We crossed the park

As soon as we enter, we will pass by the toilet hut, to our left we will see the different paths that cross this area of picnic areas and that will lead us to the real starting point of the route.

We passed by the information booth

Almost at the moment we will find another casetilla, this time an information point, which marks the beginning of the tour. The walk follows a conditioned andadero that will transport us from corner to corner.

Nos adentramos en el laberinto

We quickly came across the first crossing that gives us the opportunity to enter a curious labyrinth that runs through the dense forest.

We go through the undergrowth

This area is equipped with a rope that acts as a guide, allowing us to enjoy the thickness of the forest while we discover the different species that populate it.

To choose the path

The labyrinth does not put us in great difficulty to follow the good course that will take us back to the outside, but it can make us pass several times through the same place, if we do not choose well the route to follow.

A rope runs along the entire route

There are not many different options that we have to find. In the end, when we met the main walkway, we would surely have liked a little more difficulty in the design of this curious labyrinth.

We came out of the labyrinth

Just when we return to the main path, we do it where they converge or rather where the circle of the route we are traveling closes. Here, paying attention to the marks and signs of the route, we will continue along the path on the right which will be in charge of showing us more corners of the forest.

We keep going through the woods

This well-kept and wide trail leads us through the forest without major complications, allowing us to enjoy each place we visit.

The oaks are spectacular

As could not be otherwise, the oaks are one of the main protagonists of this natural space. The marked path meets cozy places that invite you to enjoy them calmly, taking advantage of one of the many benches that we will find.

We leave behind the shortcut

After a while a new crossing appears in front of us giving us the opportunity to shorten the route making the circle that we are drawing something smaller.

We move on.

We, ignoring this detour, go ahead so as not to miss the surprises that the forest surely has reserved for us. The route never ceases to surprise us with more interesting panoramic views, where the thick vegetation is the main protagonist.

We left behind another shortcut

Quickly we arrive at a new crossroads where we will have to choose again between continuing on the left and shorten the route or continue in front extending a little more our stay in the forest.

The trail is somewhat narrower

If you go straight on, you will enter the section of the route that crosses some of the lagoons that nourish this natural spot.

This part of the route is also worth doing

The trail in this part of the itinerary becomes a little narrower, making it difficult for people to pass it in a chair.

The path is still well-conditioned

Even so it continues to maintain its good firm and its equipment that allows us to overcome the areas of water that we will find.

We must not leave the marked route

For the rest, we will only have to follow the course of the careful path as before. Of course we should not leave the path and respect the environment around us. The route continues offering us beautiful landscapes to contemplate.

Detour to the viewpoint

The lagoons of this part of the itinerary are the ideal habitat for the fauna of this forest, and to be able to contemplate it without disturbing it we have the possibility of approaching a viewpoint of the lagoon (0h 20min), which allows us to lean out to the lagoon Tomaszelaieta to try to discover infraganti to some of the animals that live in it.

We're still on the right.

Back on the main path we come across the last shortcut we left behind that joins us again.

Deviation to the observatory

This zone of lagoons, a little clearer of vegetation, brings us closer to another detour that this time gives us the possibility to visit the bird observatory (0h 25min).

We are joined by the last of the shortcuts

Returning to the main path we will find the path that will bring here those who chose to follow the first shortcut that we found on the route.

To the left the path that leads to the Ofiteatro

All together we prepare to travel the last part of the route. But before we will have the opportunity to follow a new detour that takes us to the Ofiteatro, another of the curious corners of the forest.

Ofiteatro, here we turn around

This short trail is not suitable for people with reduced mobility. After visiting this site we will return to the main path either by the trail we arrived or following the trail that we left on our right when we climbed up here.

We arrive at the main intersection

Already in the way we only have to cross the short distance that separates us from the crossroads where the circle that we have drawn in our journey is closed.

We're heading for the information booth.

From here, leaving the entertaining labyrinth on our left, we follow the path that leads us without loss to the information booth.

Both paths lead to the same place

Once there, we will only have to choose the way we will cross the recreational area. The hut of the toilets and the road mark the proximity of the car park (0h 40min) where we end the route through the Orgi Forest.

ico-calendarioTime of year

Although we can enjoy this paradise all year round, it is the spring and autumn months that offer the visitor all the splendour of this natural space, both for the intensity of the colourful landscapes and for the activity of the fauna that inhabits them.

ico-materialRequired equipment

A comfortable footwear, if possible sporty like our clothing, is appropriate for this simple route that although perfectly conditioned is in the middle of nature. The many corners equipped with benches and the recreational area of the beginning invite to throw us in the backpack the lunch or a good book. Consult our list of material and equipment for hiking. Physical

Neither the distance, nor of course the unevenness are, or should be, an inconvenience to visit and travel this place.

Severity of environment

The layout is well conditioned, allowing the use and enjoyment of this route by people with reduced mobility, even most of the posters have explanations in Braille. We must be aware of the fragility of the ecosystem we are visiting and be respectful of it at all times, as well as not leaving the walkways that run through it.

Orientation

As long as we do not abandon the established paths we will not have any problems to follow the route, a marked layout at all times to which is added the curious labyrinth in which we will have to choose the course to follow to cover it in its entirety without leaving us any corner. There are a couple of shortcuts that partly reduce the itinerary, as well as a couple or three detours that bring us to hidden places in the forest, all of them pertinently signposted.

CURIOSITIES

¿Did you know that...

The valley of Ultzama is famous among other things for the quality and variety of its mushrooms, which is why it has created the Ultzama Mycological Park which aims to regulate its collection and guide the visitor through guided tours, exhibitions and courses to help us recognize the different types of mushrooms that occur in this area.

Don't miss out...

You will find Orkin's Millennial Oak near the town that gives it its name, close to the N-121-A road between Pamplona and Irún. It is a majestic oak located in a green meadow that is reached after a pleasant and short walk from Orkin.
