It is located in the foothills of the Iberian System, in a low-altitude mountainous area. Aguilar del Río Alhama is of ancient origin like all the villages in the area. Three cultures coexisted in the area: Arabic, Jewish and Christian. Throughout the Middle Ages it suffered a border situation with the Muslim territories. In the 14th century it became part of the lordship of Cameros, and in the 16th century the Condado de Aguilar was created.
Among the historical-artistic heritage of Aguilar del Río Alhama is the hermitage of Santa María de La Antigua or La Valvanera, Romanesque from the 12th century, the parish church of La Asunción from the 16th century, with Neoclassical and Baroque altarpieces and above all a Gothic carving of the Virgen de los Remedios and a Christ lying from the 18th century and the castle, of which only one wall and the layout of its 12th century floor are preserved. In the seventeenth century it was attached to a tower of homage.
We can also enjoy beautiful panoramic views if we walk up a track to the roof of Aguilar, Monegro, a mountain that is an immense carrascal. Walking along the Green Path of the Alhama River, or reaching the uninhabited Gutur and seeing the hermitage of Los Remedios with its carving of the Virgin, Gothic of the fourteenth century, are other options that Aguilar offers us.
Its patron saint fiestas, from 14 to 20 August, are in honour of La Asunción and San Roque. The Day of the Cross, May 3, is celebrated on the first Saturday in May.
On the first Saturday of May, the people of Aguilar del Río Alhama, together with their neighbours from Inestrillas, go on pilgrimage to the hermitage of La Virgen de Los Remedios, in the depopulated Gutur, with a picnic in which the traditional bodigos, bread stuffed with eggs and chorizo are tasted.
Once upon a time it was called Aguilar de Inestrillas. We can approach Navajún, its pyrite is one of the minerals, for its beauty and fame, most representative of Spain.
