At the confluence of the stream of the Raposeras and the stream of the Oncina, a tributary of the river Esla, Valverde de la Virgen is located in the centre of the municipality of the same name of which it forms part and which includes several localities, Fresno, Montejos, San Miguel and La Virgen, all of them under the nickname of the Way because they are located in the middle of the Jacobean route. This municipality was created in the mid-nineteenth century rather by an administrative provision. Previously they formed part of the municipality of Quintana Raneros. At first it was called Valverde del Camino but in the first quarter of the 20th century, and on the occasion of the proclamation and coronation of the patron saint of the entire region of León, Nuestra Señora la Virgen del Camino, officially changed its name to Valverde de la Virgen. In the town of Valverde de la Virgen is the Town Hall. It belonged to the old Brotherhood of Valdoncina.
In the village you can contemplate, in its parish church dedicated to Santa Engracia, the ancient bell tower of its primitive church, with its nests of the storks that every year return to them.
Valverde de la Virgen celebrates its festivities in honour of San Vicente on 22 January. It also celebrates festivities at the beginning of August.
Valverde de la Virgen, like many of the localities in the area, participates in the traditional pilgrimage of San Froilán, which from León and in procession with the image of the saint, is made to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Way.
Because the Basilica of the Virgin of the Way, patron saint of the Old Kingdom of León and currently of the whole region, is located in the municipality, and since this Virgin is a Pietà or Dolorosa, in the coat of arms of Valverde de la Virgen, in the place of honour, there is a heart pierced by seven daggers, which symbolise the seven pains and above it a closed royal crown makes mention of her patronage over the Kingdom of León.
Valverde de la Virgen, crossed from side to side by the N-120 between León-Astorga, is relatively close to the capital of León. This same road connects it with the nearby towns of La Virgen del Camino and San Miguel del Camino.
Valverde de la Virgen has a metropolitan bus service that connects it with the capital. The León bus station is located on Avenida Ingeniero Sáenz de Miera S/N Telephone 987 211 000.
The closest train stations to Valverde de la Virgen are the two that León has. León station, which is managed by Adif, best known for Renfe station, which hosts trains that run long-distance and high-speed lines, is located in Avenida de Palencia, telephone 902 240 202 and Matallana station, Feve, in Avenida Padre Isla, 48, Telephone 987 22 59 19, which provides regional services to Bilbao and Transcantábrico.
