It is in the middle of the Route of the Riojan Monasteries between Nájera, Santo Domingo de La Calzada and San Millán de La Cogolla, 40 km from Logroño. Watered by the river Tuerto, its landscape has a fairly regular relief, with gentle hills and wide plains. The first documentary references to Cañas are in the 10th and 11th centuries, when the Monastery of Cañas was donated to the Monastery of San Millán de la Cogolla by the kings, first by the King of Pamplona and then by the King of Nájera. In the year 1000, he was born in Cañas Santo Domingo de Silos. The town was part of the lordship of the County of Hervías.
In Cañas, we must make a halt, as it is an obligatory stop on the Route of the Monasteries of La Rioja, and enjoy a visit to the Cistercian Monastery of Santa María del Salvador. The parish church of La Asunción, 12th-13th centuries, with its head, sacristy and 16th century tower, the 18th century Baroque roof and the 16th century hermitage of Santa María, also deserve our attention.
On the last Saturday of May, Santa María is celebrated. The Thanksgiving feast is on 8 September, and on 20 December the feast of Santo Domingo de Silos is celebrated. On the feasts of Santa María and Santo Domingo de Silos, there are processions accompanied by popular dances, "la danza de los palos" (the dance of the sticks).
For many years, the people have gone on pilgrimage to the Monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos, Burgos, to honour their patron saint in the monastery where he took refuge when he retired to Castile from the Monastery of San Millán de La Cogolla, where he was the prior, when King García el de Nájera banished him for opposing him.
The Cistercian Monastery and the figure of Santo Domingo de Silos, born in the village of Cañas, are what best characterize it.

You can get to Cañas well by the LR-206 that joins it, on one side with the nearby municipalities of Alesanco and Azofra, as well as connecting it with the A-12 Way and the N-120 between Logroño and Burgos, on the other with Berceo and San Millán de la Cogolla. Or by the LR-327 that serves as a link with the LR-204 between the towns of Santo Domingo de la Calzada and Badarán.
Cañas offers intercity bus service from Monday to Friday.
