It is located 6 km from Santo Domingo de la Calzada and 44 km from Logroño. It is surrounded by extensive plains that gradually descend towards the north. We have references of Cirueña already in the year 960, when according to the chronicles, the Castilian Count Fernán González, after hard battle was taken prisoner, in Cirueña, by the Navarrese king García Sánchez.
Sancho II Abarca of Pamplona, founded the Monastery of San Andrés, which is mentioned in all the maps that refer to the historical monasteries of La Rioja. When the Monastery of Santa María La Real de Nájera was founded in the 11th century, King García Sánchez of Nájera donated Cirueña to this institution. In the year 1350, for various reasons, it was depopulated, and a few years later and thanks to a tax exemption, former inhabitants returned to live here. Cirueña belonged to Burgos until the province of Logroño was founded in 1833.
The parish church of San Andrés is of recent construction, but it seems, by some rest of alabaster ashlars in the apse, that has as base that of another previous pre-Romanesque temple of century X. The hermitage of La Virgen de los Remedios, located on a hill between Cirueña and Ciriñuela, was rebuilt not long ago.
Following the road towards Cañas, taking a path to the left brings us closer to the so-called Barranco de Valdián, where we will enjoy a lush forest of oaks, also called tozos or tocornos.
Cirueña celebrates the day of San Isidro, the 15th of May. The Virgen de los Remedios and Thanksgiving are celebrated on the first weekend in September. And the 30th of November San Andrés.
The third weekend of June is a pilgrimage to the Monastery of Valvanera. On the feast day of the Virgen de los Remedios, the first Sunday in September, a procession of her image takes place. In the times when the church bells were not rung during Holy Week, the children would come out with rattles or rattles and recite this retahíla: "To the Calvary women, with points and pins, which the Lord Priest has said, let us go to warn, that the bells have died and cannot be touched".
Cirueña is reached by the LR-204, this road connects Cirueña with Santo Domingo de la Calzada and in this same direction is the detour towards the LR-326 that connects it with the N-120 and the motorway Way, A-12. Following the LR-204, but in the other direction we arrive at the town of Villar de Torre, a town near Berceo and San Millán de la Cogolla.
Cirueña has a bus service from Monday to Friday, it is a Rural Line of the Government of La Rioja.
