Where the Way of Saint James passes, it is a parish that is part of the municipality of Pedrafita do Cebreiro in the heart of the eastern Galician mountains. The name of the village comes from the existence in the place of an old hospital founded by Doña Egilo, wife of Count Garzón, known for being the repopulator of El Bierzo. Around this hospital and its church of San Juan a small enclave was formed.
In the sixteenth century this place is mentioned as the hospital of the Comtesse. The church depended on the monastery of O Cebreiro and although it was the main parish until 1891, it always belonged to the archpriesthood of Triacastela.
Among the existing dairy farms in Hospital da Codesa, the building of the parish church of San Xoán, from the 12th century, stands out, with a characteristic mountain style and a tower that can be accessed by an external staircase.
It is known that kings and nobles played an important role in the Way of Saint James and built hospitals and shelters for the care of pilgrims. In Hospital da Condesa was built, in the ninth century, one of them by initiative of the Countess Doña Egilo, but the curious note has it that was the first known female foundation.
The Hospital da Condesa is reached by the LU-633 road that follows the course of the Way of Saint James joining Piedrafita do Cebreiro with Triacastela, Samos and Sarria among other localities.
