It is located to the east of the region, between Castildelgado and Belorado, on the Way to Saint James. The place, belonging to the district of Belorado, where the Duke of Frias exercised lordship, is not mentioned in documents until 1151, when Gutier Fernández de Castrojeriz donates half of Villamayor del Río to San Cristóbal de Ibeas. It also had a hospital for the poor called Hospital de la Misericordia, economically supported by the council.
The houses of the locality, in which there are typical constructions of wooden frameworks, are grouped around its parish church dedicated to San Gil, which was repaired in the second half of the eighteenth century, using for its rebuilding the Hospital de la Misericordia that was located next to it.
The 1st and 2nd of September San Gil is celebrated.
According to an ancient tradition, the Volorio river, which crosses the town from south to north, receives its name because its waters are fortunate and valuable.
Villamayor del Río is also known as the town of the three lies, because it is neither Villa, nor Major, nor does it have Rio.
There is a popular saying that says, you are taller than Maito, a well-known and legendary popular character of the old town.
The N-120 that connects Logroño with Burgos passes through Villamayor del Río. It also has access from the nearby town of Quintana del Monte and from Fresneña and San Cristóbal del Monte.
There is a daily bus service with a stop in Villamayor del Río that makes the journey Haro-Belorado or Zaragoza-Burgos.
